How To Choose The Right Types Of Fasteners Every Time

Fasteners are designed to hold different parts in place, ensuring that whatever you are building remains intact during use. The wrong type or size of fastener can compromise the whole project's integrity.

As the purchasing manager, it is important to ensure that you buy the right fasteners for the project. Here is an overview of four important factors to consider when making a purchasing plan.

The Intended Application

Fasteners vary in many important elements, including the overall design. Some designs are optimized for use with wood, while others are optimized for use with concrete and other hard materials.

Consequently, the intended application (project) should be the main guiding factor when choosing the right types of fasteners. Most projects often require more than one type of fastener.

It usually requires an expert to determine the right type of fastener based on details such as threading, size, and material. As such, it is advisable to consult closely with the project manager and other experts when deciding which fasteners to purchase. A good merchant can also offer to review the project and recommend the right fasteners to buy.

Size

Fasteners come in varying sizes, and while some are bigger than your first, others are smaller than a pebble. The wrong size of fasteners will not fit, and they will not fasten firmly if they fit. As such, it is important to choose the ideal size of fasteners. Two of the most important factors to consider when calculating sizes are the project's load case and the joint's required clamping force.

Construction Material

Fasteners are made using different materials for varying purposes. The construction material determines aspects such as durability. Three common fastener materials include:

  • Aluminum

Aluminum is preferred for its lightweight nature, and aluminum fasteners are recommended for use in applications where weight is an issue. Aluminum is also a good electricity conductor, making aluminum fasteners ideal for use in electrical applications. Additionally, this material is non-magnetic and ideal for use in applications where magnetic permeability is an issue.

However, aluminum is relatively weak and malleable, and aluminum fasteners have limited durability. As such, aluminum fasteners should only be used in applications where physical strength is not an issue.

  • Nylon

Nylon is also preferable for its lightweight nature, and nylon fasteners are lighter than aluminum fasteners. Additionally, nylon doesn't conduct electricity and is non-magnetic, making it ideal for use in applications where electromagnetic waves are an issue. Interestingly, nylon is corrosion-resistant and has reliable thermal insulating properties.

However, nylon is not as durable as other materials. Consequently, nylon fasteners are only recommended for use in applications where physical strength is not an issue.

  • Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is the most commonly used fastener material because of its tensile strength and durability. Steels’ biggest advantage over metal is that it is much stronger because of the addition of carbon. And the three major steel fasteners used in industries: carbon steel, alloy steel, and stainless steel.

Stainless steel fasteners are recommended for use in heavy-duty applications, and some of the most durable fasteners can support tons in weight. Additionally, stainless steel can withstand highly corrosive elements. That’s why stainless steel is typically preferred over metal fasteners.

It is also worth noting that stainless steel is magnetic and conducts electricity. However, some variations of stainless steel are less magnetic than others.

Exposure to Extreme Elements

Some fastener materials are resistant to negative elements such as extreme temperature and corrosion. Ideally, the screw should last as long as the product. As such, consider the project's exposure to elements such as temperature and excessive vibration and ensure that the chosen fasteners are durable.
